On the 2nd May 2019, a group of 25 students took part in a 2 days 1 night Leadership camp at Pulau Ubin. The objective of the camp was as follows
1) Self leadership – students to not give up easily
2) Peer leadership – students to encourage their peers to keep going even when it’s challenging
3) Problem solving – learning how to find solutions first instead relying on teachers
On the first day, students took the bumboat to Smith Marine Floating Restaurant where they will start the expedition. After multiple training sessions, both students and teachers were excited and ready as most are doing it for the first time.
Students have to kayak for close to 12km and they are paired which they have to communicate and work together throughout the expedition and camp. There’s an old African proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” The same applies to kayaking. Each pair has to synchronize their strokes so their kayak will move further through the waters. The students displayed teamwork, perseverance, motivated and encouraged each other when it gets challenging and tiring. To mark the end of the first day, students have to do outdoor cooking for their dinner. The process of cooking makes it worthwhile to enjoy after a long day of kayaking.
